Motorcycle Rides: What a Gorgeous Fall Day Ride to the Niagara Region

WOW!

What a FANTASTIC day for a motorcycle ride today!

After a hearty breakfast, Lynn (my wife) and I saddled up and around 10:30am and headed towards the picturesque Niagara region.

As we casually cruised along Lakeshore Road, through downtown Oakville, we glanced at the foggy, ripple free Lake Ontario from the Sixteen Mile river bridge…the lake water was calm and smooth as glass.

In Burlington, we pulled over and I snapped a picture of Lynn with the misty Burlington Skyway Bridge in the background.

Lynn and her Kawasaki Vulcan 900LT

Note: Few weeks later, price of fuel drops to .72.9/litre and London, ON received 70cm of snow with overnight temps dropping down to -10*C...YIKES!

From the Wheels section of the Toronto Star

by Lorraine Sommerfeld

Oct 02, 2008

The first time I walked into the Wheels section at the Star, the first question I was asked was whether I had my motorcycle licence.

Well, "No", I responded.

How could that possibly be a condition of writing about cars?

As I soon learned from five sets of eyeballs glowering at me from under heavy brows, it was indeed a consideration in this bike-crazy office.

STREET SMART
Get road ready for Fall Conditions

“There are really three factors key to riding in the fall,” explains Andy Hertel, manager of motorcycle-rider training at Humber College in Toronto. “One is rider preparation, and the others are the environment and road users.”

Winterizing Your Bike

Those lovely wintery scenes from the Northeastern U.S and the impending winter weather forecast for Eastern Ontario and parts is another reminder to lay our bikes to rest for another season. In that regard, here is a link you may find useful in winterizing your bikes.

Note: Don’t make the mistake of just pushing your motorcycle into the garage for winter. Storage can protect your investment and keep you from sitting along the side of the road on your first spring ride.

UCC Ride: Al’s “Annual” Wine Run – Sept 28, 2008

UCC Rides

A great Fall day for Al’s circuitous tour of the Niagara Escarpmant and Wine Country. Did I count 10 bikes with 3 riding 2 up? Do I forecast a couple or 3 new members for UCC? Donna? Lidia? Derek (that was the name right with his Polish tourist passenger? Sorry, forgot her name, too)?

Gorgeous Fall Day

Note: This leisurely escorted ride takes you along the shores of Lake Ontario to steep challenging passageways of the Bruce escarpment and then onto Niagara’s fragrant picturesque wine country.

GOTTA LUV PA

Dear UCC Members,

Due to overwhelming demand there will be a repeat of the Tristate tour during the labour day weekend. Take-off is from exit 38B (Niagara-on-the Lake) at precisely 8:30 AM, Fri Aug 29 .Planned return for Mon Sept 1. Please arrive earlier if you are having coffee or breakfast.

Freddy cruisin' n' singin',...'On the Road again....'

Toll Bridge at Old Town, Maryland - Cost? .25/motorcycle to cross this private, wooden planked one lane bridge...Yikes!

Note: This tour encompasses three states, PA, Md and West Virginia. What follows is a small excerpt from RoadRunner magazine re: the Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway (SR381).

" Gentle sweeping curves lead through a rolling countryside of horse farms. In West Virginia the terrain gets more rugged and the riding becomes more fun, but also more challenging. Decreasing radius, off-camber, downhill curves demand full concentration. The scenery in this remote, less populated area is often breathtaking"

Motocycle Event: Motorcops Competition at Humber College

Watched the motorcops do their timed partner ride, today, at Humber College in lot 4. They attach a tether between 2 bikes and quickly ride a slalom course. If the tether breaks or a pylon is knocked over, they are disqualified. Very cool exercise!

There definitely was a lot of testosterone in the air.

Final competition is tomorrow...

"Let the good times roll!"

Motorcycle Rides: West Virginia

"Hi There!"
Lynn and I just got back from beautiful West Virginia...

We left 'GPS Fred' and party Monday morning, in Somerset Pa, for their trek back home while Lynn and I headed south into West Virginia via Rte 219

In WV Lynn noticed a sign which read CAUTION: This road not recommended for trucks..."Hey!", she cracked over the CB radio,"Must be a motorcycle road with wicked tight twists and turns."

We quickly hit the binders and turned onto Rte 72. Initially the road was fine, but then it turned into a frost heaved choppy ride with vicious uphill/downhill narrow switchbacks...barely got out of 2nd gear for 17 miles...

Rest Stop at the Pennsylvania/Maryland Border

Note: West Virginia, with it’s rolling hills, scenic valleys and winding highways, is one of America's best-kept motorcycling secrets.
